Learn Create Share from Chris J Wilson - Issue #7 (Digital Commonplace Books)
I got a new paper notebook this week.
It’s to replace my last notebook (a Rhodia Web notebook) which is almost full.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve had clear examples of the benefits of keeping a commonplace book.
- I quickly found some useful notes related to work.
- I flipped back through old ideas and got reinspired (plus saw why I rejected ideas).
- And I enjoyed adding more idea and stupid sketches.
I really enjoy the benefits of a paper commonplace book for exactly these reasons. It’s a fun place to explore and has possibilities.
But this week I heard an episode of the accidental creative podcast (link below) that made me think about a digital commonplace book again. (Not that I haven’t thought about it before and started a blog with that name).
I don’t want to say too much but I’ve downloaded Notability again (I use goodnotes for actual notes on the iPad and it seems a good idea to have a specific commonplace app) to try this idea out. If you’re more interested, listen to the podcast episode.

Eva Design System: Deep learning color generator
This is a fun little tool. You enter one colour and then you get suggested other colours for a website.
The Dent - Get Your Site Ready For Dark Mode
I followed Andy’s short guide to get my Micro.blog site ready for dark mode on iOS 13 (and for macOS already). Obviously, some of the css classes are different in different themes.
A quick Rohdia webnotebook review
About 3 months ago I picked up a Rhodes webnotebook instead of my usual leuchttrum notebook. It was an extension of my philosophy of tools where I like to experiment and try and not just stick to one tool, especially for relatively cheap items like a notebook that need replacing.
The paper is the real star here. It’s a heavy clairefontain paper that likes fountain pen ink. You can see different shades across the page when you use a stub nib.
But it didn’t feel right when using a gel pen.
So I’ve gone back to leuchttrum for my latest notebook and I’m trying a softcover for a change. I want to stick more things into it this time and I’m hoping that the flex of the soft cover will help.
Till next week
Have a great weekend and week. Hit reply if you currently do or are thinking about trying a digital commonplace book.
